day 15: rain, candles, and romantic languages
alright. wednesday. let’s see…
i messed around on my computer this morning, doodling in illustrator and reading the news. haha despite having a lot to do, i still find it really important to have veg time every now and then. literacy was a blast, as always- i was on crowd patrol and had to calm down maycol, which was relatively easy compared to math. math was just armando and kristian (once again, sp?) and kristian was a rock star for the first half, but when her attention span went south, so did her attitude. we played some card games and she settled down.
i almost went to the land for english, but stayed at el farito instead for english/playing with kids. english was challenging, as always, since my spanish is pretty shiesty, but i got to work on converstions in the past tense… in english. holler.
we came back for dinner and planned on having a movie night (harry potter uno) after a few meetings, but instead, the power lost itself… or decided to turn off. or something. we ate (much to the chagrin of our small kitchen, when it seemed that all 20 of us tried to fit in our my-little-kitchen) some pasta, potato bread, awesome stuff, etc. some indulged in rice and beans, others mac-n-cheese. i stayed to a strict all-carb diet, concluding with ice cream and chocolate sauce. i don’t think i’ve ever enjoyed eating out of the tub so much.
sidenote: the other day, some of the PD’s agreed that while down here, we do totally random and not-at-all-routine-at-home americanized habits, like sticking a finger in the PB jar and eating it all. or gorging on a bag of oreos and milk. rarities down here, but for sure awesome.
so after a great feast of sugars and starches, the power went out. not for any specific amount of time, it just kept going on and off. the first few blackouts we got candles, but the electricity (as noted by the lights and more importantly the fans) returned. however, by the time for our meeting, no sign of an electric current was to be found this side of el farito. or something like that.
we had a meeting by candlelight, and then we decided to play catch phrase… with a twist. the words were given in english, and had to be guessed in english, but the clues could ONLY be given in spanish. it was a huge test for everybody and it was really rewarding (and stressful, for sure). my team won, as usual… ha. sorry team 2 aka team adventure, you just don’t have the baffoonery needed to win without me.
after the power returned, we proceeded to play and plan more. no one really knows what happened to the night, but we all agree: it went way to fast—just like this entire trip.
nica fun fact: san salvador is more clean and better than managua, according to josh, and just highlights the fact that a paradigm shift needs to occur down here.
‘nother nica fun fact: you can’t flush TP because it will clog the plumbing. so you’ll see a lot of trashcans next to toilets down here.
paz,
